Rupert Aker - artist

The Domestic Goblin first heard about Rupert Aker (a Cotswold-based landscape painter) in April 2024 when she watched a YouTube video by Nicholas Burden aka Nicolas Fairford, talking about a lovely painting he had commissioned and was hanging majestically in his home.

Below are some examples of the colours Rupert uses in his impressionist paintings and the depth and texture he creates by painting oils with a palette knife.

Eilish Sculptures

The Domestic Goblin is not a fan or a follower of Billie Eilish and does not know very much about them. However, YouTuber Dr Dray was very strongly enamoured with the Eilish perfume in one of her December 2023 videos and the bottle caught the Domestic Goblin's attention.

Basically, the Domestic Goblin was not interested in the juice itself but was coveting the perfume bottle and wanted them as ornaments to display! 

The Domestic Goblin finally purchased the perfume in March 2024 and it smells surprisingly okay. The Domestic Goblin loves how the bottle doubles as an art sculpture.

The Disappointment that is Achim-Haetsal

After watching Mr Z drinking and enjoying some Achim-Haetsal (a Korean Morning Rice Drink) on the Korean Englishman YouTube channel, the Domestic Goblin wanted to find a bottle to taste test.

This was easy to find in any good reputable Asian supermarket. Disappointingly, it tasted like chocolate milk with a rice aroma. It reminded the Domestic Goblin of the cloudy water you pour away after rinsing the rice.

Verdict: Far too sweet and milky, and not enough rice flavour in the actual drink. Children might enjoy this.

Will not recommend and will not repurchase.

Happy People Use Perfume

The Domestic Goblin only discovered the house of Teo Cabanel in February 2023 via perfume loving members of the YouTube community.

In March 2023, DG decided to purchase and test out the Discovery Set and her thoughts are below...

Smells more like steamed rice than the scent of toasted rice/savoury popcorn most commonly associated with gemaicha. 

~ Tres French

Generic green perfume scent.

~ Encore

All carrot and soy milk. No cake.

~ Et Voila

Musky soap.

~ Oh La La

DG appears to be anosmic to the notes.

~ Cafe Cabanel

Linear coconut latte.

~ Ca Boum

Salty and sweet.

~ Oha

Leather and oakmoss that lingers.

~ Rendezvous

Polite blossoms.

Pink musk.

Clove and patchouli domination.

Overall thoughts: Contrary to the YouTube reviews, the DG found the majority of their fragrances does not live up to the 'beast mode' claims. In reality, the projection and sillage is gentle and disappointingly, the scent itself disappears after a couple of hours. 

Alas! Due to longevity issues and lack of the joy factor, the DG won't be purchasing full sized bottles of any of these scents.

This such a shame because the customer service team at Teo Cabanel are quick to respond and helpful!

ATH Unicorn: Project, Imprint & Last

The Domestic Goblin only discovered Aaron Terence Hughes in February 2023 via a YouTube fragrance review video.

Aaron used to be a Cosmetic Chemist and has since evolved into a Perfumer and launched his own independent perfume house.

Some information from his website:

Aaron does use ethical ambergris in some of his fragrance. But does not use any other animal biproducts.

After some careful consideration, the Domestic Goblin decided to buy Carbon and Onyx, followed by Ozone and Tabac in the 10ml Extract de Parfum.

~ Carbon

Described as Clean, Fresh, Light and Airy. 

"Carbon has been designed to increase the longevity and projection of the fragrances you already own and love, but which might need a little help radiating and lasting. Carbon can now be worn on its own for a very clean scent that lasts!" (ATH)

Top notes: Bergamot

Middle notes: White Floral Notes, Amber, Ylang Ylang, Radiant Woods, Heliotropin, Vanilla

Base notes: Musks, Clean Skin Accord, Ethical Ambergris.

DGs comments: When sprayed onto warm skin after a hot bubble bath, it is how DG imagined Suskind's baby to smell like: milky caramel. When sprayed onto cold skin, all DG gets is clean musk.

Works better layered underneath other scents that need help projecting/radiating.

DGs verdict: ❌ as standalone scent.

DGs verdict:  ✅ will repurchase to help with projection and longevity of other scents.

~ Onyx

"Dark, brooding and very sexy. When I created Onyx I wanted it to do three things. Project, imprint and last. Onyx lasts over 12 hours, projects in a huge way and touching another person imprints Onyx onto them making this a perfect date or sex fragrance. You will get noticed wearing Onyx." (ATH)

Top notes: Rose Absolute.

Middle notes: Vanilla Absolute, Plum, Chocolate.

Base notes: Patchouli, Thai Oud, Ethical Ambergris, Sandalwood, Musk.

DG's comments: Creates a beautiful aura around the wearer. 

DG's verdict: ✅ Worthy of a repurchase,  however, it attracts the wrong kind of people.

~ Ozone

"Ozone is my first 'commercial' fragrance. Ozone is bright, ozonic, massively projecting and long lasting. Ozone is fun and packed full of summer." (ATH)

"ATH wanted to bridge the gap between designer and niche fragrances. So it's got designer sensibilities (easy to wear, very mass-appealing) but it has the quality and complexity of a niche fragrance." (FRAG-MENTAL)

Top notes: Bergamot (blended for the house of ATH), Lemon, Lime, Spearmint.

Middle notes: Ozone, Coconut, Mocha Accord, Ambroxan.

Base notes: Ethical Ambergris / White Musk  / Driftwood / Patchouli

DGs comments: Smells like drinking a milky coffee straight after brushing your teeth. 

DGs verdict: ❌ Not a bad scent, but DG did not want to pay money to smell like toothpaste and cappuccino.

~ Tabac

"I developed Tabac for people with class and who understand what a well crafted fragrance smells like. This fragrance is suitable for all occasions from a day off walking your dogs, to the office to going out for a drink. I designed Tabac to be a signature scent for all people." (ATH)

Top notes: Tobacco Leaf

Middle note: Madagascan Vanilla Absolute, Tobacco, Turkish Rose.

Base notes: Burmese Oud, Cedar Wood, Ethical Ambergris.

DGs comments: The oud dominates for hours. Can't detect any tobacco or vanilla. Smells like temple incense inside a gentleman's club, but not in a good way. 

DGs verdict: ❌❌

Described as Sweet, Clean and Evocative.

Top notes: Bergamot, Pear, Neroli.

DGs comments: On cold skin, it smells like a clean jasmine solifore with no drydown. On warmed up skin/in warmer weather, the fruity notes come through which was a pleasant surprise after the first few days of underwhelming performance. Like a totally different scent.

DGs verdict: ✅ but won't repurchase.

~ Red Fever

"My own personal fragrance. I wear this a lot under clothing over the top of the red fever body butter and over the top clothes. On my skin the sillage and projection is amazing." (ATH)

Top notes: Bergamot, Pear.

Middle notes: Lily, Raspberry, Plum, Peach.

Base notes: Almond, Vanilla, Amber, Oakmoss, Ambergris, 2% Rose Absolute.

DGs comments: A pleasant fruity vanilla that turns into an intimate skin scent. Doesn't project much on DGs skin.

DGs verdict: ✅ Might work better for someone else.

~ Blue Fever

Described as: Easy to wear, lots of projection and sillage, perfect for all occasions.

Top notes: Lemon, Mandarin, Bergamot.

Middle notes: Amber, Grapefruit, Green Apple, Lily of the Valley, Sea Notes.

Base notes: Oakmoss, Sandalwood, Vetiver, Patchouli, Elemi Resin, Peppermint.

DGs comments: If mermen existed, they would smell like this.

DGs verdict: ✅✅ Will repurchase as a gift for others.

~ Onyx Extreme

Top notes: Rose Absolute (4%).

Middle notes: Vanilla Absolute, Plum, Chocolate, Raspberry, Ylang Ylang.

Base notes: Amber, Oakmoss, Patchouli, 7.6% Thai Oud, Ethical Ambergris, Sandalwood, Musk.

DGs comments: On warm, just got out of the bath skin, this fragrance goes straight to the base notes. As your skin cools down, you smell the middle and top and notes. A perfume in reverse.

DGs verdict: ✅✅ A smoother version of Onyx and attracts the right sort of person.

Top notes: Rose Absolute, Ozone.

Middle notes: Amber, Jasmine, Fig, Truffle.

DGs comments: DG loves the fact that the notes in both Onyx Extreme and Onyx Air develop in reverse on her skin.

DGs verdict: ✅✅ A sweeter and, dare I say it, more innocent version of Onyx.

~ Censored Elixir (previously known as Hard Candy Elixir)

The Domestic Goblin purchased this scent to show her support for Aaron and in rejection of unfair censorship.

Top notes: Mint, Lavender, Sweet Orange, Lemon,  Mandarin Orange

Middle notes: Strawberry, Vanilla, Tonka, Amber, Honey, Nutmeg
Base notes: White Musk, Musk, Patchouli, Oud, Ambergris, Sandalwood.

DGs comments: On DGs skin it smells like a musty old library book and fleeting out-of-season strawberries and nothing else. This particular scent performs better in the cap and on paper. 

DGs verdict: ❌ Disappointed. Over hyped.

~ Supersonic

Described as Supernova taken to the extreme.

Top notes: Grapefruit, Bergamot, Sweet Orange, Lemon.

Middle notes: Apple, Pineapple, Sea Notes.

Base notes: Ambergris, Ginger, Oakmoss,  Patchouli, Haitian Vetiver, White Musk.

DGs comments: Purchased as a Christmas present for someone else. Fresh and citrusy.

DGs verdict: ✅ Will repurchase as a gift for someone else.

Frivolous August

After deliberating about it for a number of years, and recently experiencing mixed results from fleece pillowcases and a fleece fitted sheet, the Domestic Goblin purchased a set of satin pillowcases in the hope that these will protect her hair and face whilst sleeping.

Verdict: The cool satin helped the Domestic Goblin to sleep better during uncomfortable humid nights. Noticeable difference to her hair.

The Domestic Goblin also purchased the following skincare items:

~ iUNIK Centella Calming Gel Cream 

~ iUNIK Tea Tree Relief Serum

(Both recommended by Hyram Yarbro, skincare enthusiast from YouTube).

Verdict: Really helped to prevent further maskne breakouts and helped to calm down heat rashes on face and body. 

~ Beet The Sun SPF 47 PA++++ by Krave Beauty (recommended by Dr Andrea Suarez, dermatologist from YouTube).

Verdict: Comfortable on the skin and no white cast, however, a 50ml bottle will be used up very quickly. Hope that Krave Beauty offers a larger bottle soon.

~ CeraVe Salicylic Acid Smoothing Cleanser

~ CeraVe Salicylic Acid Smoothing Cream

~ CeraVe AM Facial Moisturising Lotion with SPF25

(Took advantage of the Boots 3 for 2 offer).

Verdict: The cleanser disrupted the skin barrier on my face and actually works better and is more effective as a body wash, once a week. The cream works effectively as a chemical exfoliator for the underarms reducing the need to buy deodorant. The moisturising lotion with SPF25 works fine but is rather thick for a lotion.  Won't repurchase.

Frivolous July

In 2018, the Domestic Goblin had completed a course of IPL treatments on her underarms, legs and Brazilian area with a local beauty salon. She was due for her annual top up in 2019 but due to other personal life distractions, she wasn't able to do this and had hoped to do this in 2020. Even though beauty parlours are allowed to re-open now, she was hesitant to return.

During the month of July, the Domestic Goblin decided to invest in an IPL device to use at home.

Product purchased:
~ Kenzzi IPL handset
Verdict: Does the job. Customer service very responsive.

* IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light and is typically used for hair reduction, not removal *



The Domestic Goblin also discovered Stylevana.com, courtesy of Skincare By Hyram. This website sells Korean beauty products and currently offers free delivery to the UK if you spend over £30.

Products purchased:

~ Purito Centella Green Level Unscented Sunscreen SPF50
Pros: A comfortable sunscreen to wear. Pleased to hear it doesn't give a white cast on darker skin tones.

Cons: Only contains two UV filters. Rather small amount of product for the price.  

Verdict: Will gladly recommend to others but won't repurchase.

~ Coconut Oil Cleansing Pads by Solved Skincare
Pros: Does not break out the skin like raw coconut oil. Does not cause irritation to eyes. 

Cons: Pads were too big and too saturated for DG's liking. May suit someone who wears heavier makeup daily. 

Verdict: Will continue using but won't repurchase.

~ Coconut Water Cleansing Foam by Solved Skincare
Verdict: A pleasant cleansing experience but won't replace her damp face cloth method. Will recommend to others but won't repurchase.



Continuing on the coconut theme, Domestic Goblin also purchased two new deodorant sticks:

~ Kopari Coconut Deodorant
Verdict: Glides on easily and doesn't leave any white marks on clothing. Will need to test for a longer period before giving a final verdict.

~ Mitchum Bamboo Powder Coconut Deodorant
Verdict: Works well but leaves a lot of white marks on dark clothing. This is a deal breaker.  Will not repurchase.

I stumbled upon this brand whilst watching a current favourites video by Estee Lalonde starring Allegra Shaw who mentioned her favourite daytime mascara. Keen to find a mascara that matches my Holy Grail (Maybelline Full n Soft Waterproof), I had initially planned to order just the mascara online but ended up purchasing three products:


~ Invisible Shield Daily Sunscreen SPF30
A clear gel sunscreen. Felt comfortable on my skin. Like the fact that it won't go ashen on other skin tones. Very small bottle for the price.


~ Milky Jelly Cleanser
A standard conditioning facial cleanser that is kind on your eyes. Does not claim to remove waterproof mascara  - you will need an oil cleanser for that.



~ Lash Slick Mascara
Dry formula which did not clump regardless of how many layers you apply. However, although this mascara gave me length, it also gave me anorexic-thin and brittle looking lashes. It also did not hold my curl. Deal breaker on all parts.




Complimentary fragrance sample: 
~ You 
Claims to have notes of iris root, pink pepper, ambrette, ambrox and musk. However, according to my nose and two other colleagues, it just smells like fruity hair conditioner.

Verdict: products were not good enough to warrant a second purchase.

House of Kerosene

John Pegg came onto my radar a few years ago when he made YouTube videos under the username of Kerosenetrewthe reviewing fragrances such as Bvlgari Black and Lime Basil & Mandarin.

He has now created his own line of fragrances: Kerosene Fragrances; forged from the outer regions of Detroit, Michigan.

I decided to sample three of the fragrances:


~ Copper Skies

Description: The sky is a thick copper hue, painted in bands of honey, clove and amber. Below the horizon, sweet basil drifts from dark cedar trees embedded with tobacco leaves beneath the bark. The air is smokey, spicy and slightly sweet. Your mouth creases into a small simper as the presence of fragrance is taken in. 

Notes: Amber, Cedar, Tobacco leaves, Honeycomb, Basil and Cloves. 


~ Creature
Description: Creature is all about fresh greens with earthy undertones. With this scent, think fresh cut grass that was sprinkled with mint. As it dries, it reminds me of skin gently warmed by the sun. Natural and clean. 

Notes: Sweet birch, Mint, Lemon, Jasmine, Green tea, Sage, Violet leaves, Cypress, Cedar, Patchouli and Moss.


~ Unforsaken
Description: A decadent dessert sprinkled with warm coconut shavings and topped with cool clementine slices. They will be drawn near, as vanilla cream and tonka beans envelope the air. There are times you may want to be tasted, and not forgotten, nor forsaken.

Notes: Tangerine, Clementine, Coconut, Yuzu, Orange Blossom, Jasmine, Ginger, Tonka Beans, Benzoin, Vanilla and Musk

~ Broken Theories
Description: Dark corners of a room seem to creep and reach out as the midnight clouds steal the last remaining shards of moonlight. Memories of smokey dreams are lost within your mind. Ruminating over the scent of mystery and nightfall, the fire you went through drifts along the air, the spices of heartache linger on the skin. Assured, you know morning will come, the darkness will subside, and the theory that everything remains dreadful will be smashed and broken.

~ Unknown Pleasures
Description: You're walking down a cold street in England, listening to Joy Division, sipping on a  warm cup of London Fog. This fragrance opens up with the smooth sweetness of honey with Earl Grey tea, with a zing of lemon. It dries down to a cozy vanilla, sweet tonka bean and waffle cone base, sure to make any gourmand lover smile.

Notes: Earl Grey tea, Lemon, Bergamot, Honey, Tonka Bean, Caramel, Vanilla and Waffle Cone.

Los Angeles based company founded in 2011 offering water based parfums, hand made with love, that is paraben free, phthlate free and cruelty free. Each scent has been inspired and influenced by the poems loved by Emily Lape.

Perfect balance between soft and sweet. Jasmine, Creamy Orange, Vanilla and Soft Musk.

~ No. 6 Luna + Azul
Sugar and Spice and everything nice. A spicy vanilla blend with a floral back note. Cinnamon, Bergamot, Velvety Vanilla, Tuberose and Oakmoss.

After reading the descriptions from the official website and watching the youtube reviews by elisasung and pinkiecharm, I ordered samples in No. 2 La Belle + Dame, No. 4 Paper + Lantern and No. 5 Midnight + Swim. I also received a bonus sample in No. 6 Luna + Azul.

VERDICT: I do like No. 4 Paper + Lantern, (the scent reminds me of an aloe vera face cream) but no enough to convince me to purchase a full sized bottle. If they removed the wildflowers from No. 5 Midnight + Swim, it would be a temptingly unique scent (for some reason, the wildflower note induced a hayfever-like reaction).

~ February 2009: a Sterling Silver and Tibetan Black Quartz Crystal Ring. Handcrafted in sterling silver and contains a natural black quartz crystal from Tibet. This naturally terminated stone is about 15mm x 8mm and the ring is a US size 4.25. The ring has a durable sterling silver rectangular band and the stone is securely bezel set with an open back.

~ July 2009:  a Faceted Oval Mystic Topaz and Sterling Silver Ring with Vine Motif. Handcrafted in sterling silver and contains a faceted mystic topaz from Brazil that displays a beautiful multicolour iridescent colouration. The stone measures 9mm x 7mm. The ring is a US size 4.25 and has a sterling silver split shank band with an elegant vine design on either side of the setting, and the stone is securely bezel set.
